Riding in lightness, collection on a loose rein, skillful and humane cow work, reata or vaquero style ranch roping -

these are the things that make up the horsemanship called Californio

Jeremy Dunn was born with a deep seeded passion for anything that has to do with horses and cattle. In that passion also comes a respect and love for the history of his ancestors, the Californio Vaqueros. Jeremy's Great, great grand father Anselmo Campas began his Vaquero career at the age of twelve at the Tejon Rancheria. He was also very interested in medicine and he became the person to call for illness or for delivering babies.  He was Yaqui Indian and his family lived farther north in the San Joaquin Valley until the United States government, in the late 1800s,  decided to make the Indians go to reservations.  The U S  hired German Hessian mercenaries to see that the Indians were sent to the reservations. Anselmo's father did not wish to go to the reservation they wanted him and his family to, (The Tule Reservation) he wanted to go elsewhere to another reservation, so to punish him for his disobedience they cut his fingers off.  (This is a true fact handed down from Mary Campas Rodriguez, Jeremy's Great Grandmother.) He and his family fled down to the Tejon Rancheria when Anselmo was twelve. These early ranchos ran vast numbers of cattle, sheep and horses on open range where the vaqueros earned their keep horseback. There was no hurry in those days and to live by a watch or calendar was rarely needed. The vaqueros took great pride in their horsemanship and when it came to training horses, that same easy style to life applied.

As the saying goes, there is always manana; no hurry, there is always tomorrow.

That idea along with the ability to read what a horse needs just when they need it helps to make such a soft and responsive partner. My family and I operate our ranch on a 160 acres on the south base of the Tehachapi Mountains. We are honored to be bordered on three sides by the historic Tejon Ranch, the same ranch that my Great, Great Grandfather worked. This unique location allows us to give the horses a job and therefore a purpose. The horses love the challenge and learning comes easy to them. We run our own cow / calf herd and keeping to tradition we work our cattle horseback. Along with training we offer horsemanship and cattle clinics, along with the traditional horsemanship methods of training and riding.

If a prospect is what your looking for, we have a number of nice colts being offered for sale already started.
